Advantages of Sand Casting:

1. Almost any ferrous and non-ferrous metals can be casted by sand casting; 

2. Parts caan vary greatly in size, weight and shape. Weight can be from ounces to hundreds of tons; 

3. Cost of tools is low comparing to other process; 

4. Small quantity or large quantity; 

5. Relative low cost for high volume parts.

 

Typical minimum wall thickness: smm for lghtalloys -closer 5-6mm for steel and other ferrousalloys. This is highly dependent on the exact alloyso. Maximum wall thickness: thick sections are possible in excess of 100mm Draft angles: draft angles of 1-5 Degrees arerequired Achievable linear tolerances:+/-0.4-0.5mm withadditional 0.2-0.25mm over mould parting linesand core joints Typical linear tolerances:+/-1mm with additiona1mm over mould parting lines and core joints Flatness: typically 0.1mm per 25mm(excludinglocalised pitting) Surface finish: 3.2-25.0 Ra (Micrometers) Machining allowance: typically 0.5-1.6% or 1.5- 6mm Size Limitations: 20g to many hundreds of tonnesin weight are possible.
